Auditable model · scoring version 2026-09-01.3
Weather evidence in. A personal opportunity shortlist out.
Bluebird does not pretend that one fixed definition of “nice weather” makes Reno, Boston, or Los Angeles a good trip for everybody. The canonical engine preserves its auditable seven-day comfort verdict; the additive opportunity engine applies a named weather lens and trip length, then builds a small, varied portfolio. Origin, route reach, weather, profile fit, reusable knowledge, usage, and trip research remain separate engines.
1 Go · 19 Hold · 39 Don’t
A retained 59-destination SFO reference run is shown below as an auditable example. It is not the current origin boundary. The earlier binary engine hid the middle; this three-way engine preserves it.
Whole-product architecture
Separate engines combine; none silently rewrites another
The customer selects a starting point, travel mode, and reach. Bluebird then joins independent evidence in a fixed order. Green engines work now, amber engines have an enforced contract but no live provider, and grey engines are planned product services.

Verified FlySan Francisco has dated route evidence through 8h and London through 4h; every featured origin still exposes 2/3/4/8h.
Estimated FlyNew York, Chicago, Berlin, Rome, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Toronto, Vancouver, and Miami use labeled geographic reach. A 75 km origin catchment excludes nearby city and airport alternatives; longer regional trips still need route verification.
Curated DriveEvery featured starting city has planning rows for Drive.
Featured Drive catalogsAll 12 featured cities use separately curated Drive planning rows. They are never presented as live directions, traffic, or accessibility evidence.
Any saved hometownA signed-in Fly search resolves an unambiguous hometown to coordinates and an airport hint, then applies labeled geographic reach. Custom Drive searches wait for a route-aware provider.
Reusable knowledgeDestination facts and time-bounded observations retain provider provenance, validity, confidence, licensing, and review state. Current verified experience tags feed the opportunity ranker; Member data and live commercial inventory are rejected at this boundary.
The non-negotiable ruleReach determines what can be checked. Weather determines the forecast verdict. Personal fit orders relevance inside that verdict. Air, road, traffic, and stay help someone act after a Go. Commercial relationships and provider failures cannot buy or rewrite any upstream result.
Opportunity layer · version 2
Different trips use different published weather lenses
Each lens grades every day as Suitable, Marginal, or Poor from temperature, rain, and wind, then applies the same 50-member evidence discipline. The free read consistently uses Default Explorer; a signed-in personal search applies the member's chosen lens. Cloud cover is context, never a hidden rejection. Personal absolute heat limits can remove a place from the positive pool; they cannot rewrite its stored forecast evidence.
Default explorerSuitable highs 55–90°F, rain under 2 mm, wind under 30 km/h. A broad discovery lens.
City & foodSuitable highs 50–90°F, rain under 2 mm, wind under 35 km/h. More tolerant for an urban trip.
Beach air-weatherSuitable highs 72–92°F, rain under 1 mm, wind under 20 km/h. It does not claim water temperature or beach quality.
WalkingSuitable highs 50–82°F, rain under 1 mm, wind under 25 km/h. It does not claim trail or accessibility quality.
Completeness gateThe opportunity layer appears only when it covers every reachable destination in the same trusted run and agrees with canonical destination identity. If it is absent, partial, or malformed, Bluebird keeps the complete canonical board instead of blanking or inventing results.
The complete path
Eight canonical gates from eligible place to answer
A row cannot skip a gate. The separate reach engine changes which destinations are evaluated; canonical weather evidence supplies the compatibility verdict; the opportunity engine may add a complete lens-based presentation without changing those source rows.
Accept an eligible set
Receive destinations from the selected origin, mode, and reach. Verified routes and explicitly estimated Fly reach remain different evidence states.
Load one complete run
Require every destination in one hashed target set and all four forecast windows from one completed ECMWF ensemble run. Never mix runs.
Validate 50 members
Every destination needs exactly 50 complete numeric member series, valid dates, expected grid coordinates, and sane units.
Build four windows
Seven-day windows begin at lead days 1, 3, 5, and 7. Their midpoint lead days are 4, 6, 8, and 10.
Judge every day
A day matches only when all three published high-temperature, rain, and wind rules pass.
Classify every member
Count matching days per seven-day window, then place the member in Strong, Borderline, or Poor.
Adjust decisive evidence
After midpoint day 8, reduce Strong and Poor equally as lead-time uncertainty grows.
effective = round(raw × lead weight)
Verdict, then selection
Apply the symmetric 40-of-50 rule. Prefer Go over Hold, then higher effective Strong, shorter route band, and stable destination ID.
Weather contract
What makes one day match
All three conditions must be true. The boundaries are deliberate: temperature is inclusive; rain and wind are strict.
64.4–82.4°FDaily high, inclusive (18–28°C)
< 2 mmDaily precipitation
< 25 km/hMaximum 10 m wind speed
Strong5–7 matching days
BorderlineExactly 4
Poor0–3 matching days
Go40 or more lead-adjusted Strong members
HoldNeither decisive Strong nor decisive Poor reaches 40
Don’t40 or more lead-adjusted Poor members
Challenge the threshold
Move the same controls the engine uses
Strong plus Borderline plus Poor always equals 50. Lead adjustment affects both decisive sides symmetrically and can only move an extreme verdict toward Hold.

Neither decisive side reaches 40, so uncertainty is preserved as Hold.
Why range clicks matter
A retained SFO example shows how the pool grows
In this historical reference, the selected winner may remain Reno if none of the newly admitted candidates beats its weather evidence. That is different from the range failing: coverage, new rows, map shortlist, and counts must all change.
Examples added: 3h admits Albuquerque, Calgary, Denver, Seattle and five more; 4h admits Austin, Dallas–Fort Worth, Edmonton, Minneapolis and five more; 8h admits Boston, Honolulu, Miami, New York, Washington and fourteen more.
Reference limitation: these are retained, manually maintained planning estimates from one SFO audit run—not live schedules or measured itinerary durations and not proof of current availability. Current featured-origin boards disclose verified routes and estimated Fly reach separately.
Input boundary
Used in a verdict
- Daily maximum temperature
- Daily precipitation total
- Daily maximum 10 m wind speed
- 50 member series across four seven-day windows
- Symmetric lead-time weight
Validated or displayed, not decisive
- Daily minimum temperature
- Mean cloud cover
- Temperature percentile summary
- Median wet-day count
- Route estimate and airport gateway label
Not in this canonical weather engine
- Humidity, smoke, air quality, UV, snow, water temperature
- Fares, seats, schedules, hotels, crowds
- Beach, hiking, food, mobility, or accessibility quality
- A user’s interests or saved profile; those enter later isolated engines
Gateway limitation: a row scores the named city forecast grid. “Reno” does not separately score Lake Tahoe; “Arcata” does not separately score every redwood park or beach. The UI strips unsupported regional promises from the weather verdict label.

When the board must show nothing
UNAVAILABLEBluebird suppresses the whole board if the canonical run is stale, partial, mixed across runs, missing a target destination or window, malformed, target-set mismatched, or inconsistent with the exact three-way verdict math. It does not fabricate a fallback destination. An incomplete opportunity layer is different: it stays in shadow and the complete canonical board remains visible.
